Unsupported Mothers' Group, 1971 - 1972
Scope and Contents
Papers and correspondence relating to the Unsupported Mothers' Group, one of the first initiatives to spring from the Cambridge Women's Liberation Group (see introductory note above). Including the following:
1) Flyer advertising the UMG, no date, Margaret Dyson's name penned at top;
2) Papers concerning the case of Ann Baxter, unsupported mother, including: One Month in the Life of Ann Baxter, no date, 4pp ts; copies of press cuttings concerning her Social Security appeal as an unsupported mother [1971]; flyers produced by the CWL Group concerning her case; articles concerning the case in Ink: The Other Newspaper, May and June 1971; BBC offer to produce a report on the case on Look East, April 1971;
3) Sarah Smalley's correspondence concerning an application by a group of unsupported mothers for the rental of 153 Huntingdon Road, April - May 1971;
4) Mill Road Maternity Hospital incident: ts account by Kate Richards of events at the Hospital, 28 August 1971, concerning the ejection by police from the delivery room of two female friends of an unmarried mother about to give birth; also typescript of an article by Kate Richards concerning the same, entitled 'Woman in Labour', for Bulletin no 4 of the Cambridge Society for Social Responsibility in Science, November 1971;
5) 48 Milton Road: press cuttings, correspondence and legal papers concerning the setting up by the UMG of a squat at 48 Milton Road and their eventual eviction by King's College from the house, 1971-72; also miscellaneous papers concerning other squats run by Cambridge Squatters at 16 John Street and 102 Huntingdon Road;
6) 48 Milton Road: photocopy of affidavit of Bertram Arkwright, Estates Bursar of King’s College, in the matter of 48 Milton Road, Cambridge, 1972; 1page typescript flyer entitled ‘Support the Squat’ [1972?]; b/w [press?] photograph of squatters sitting on the steps of 48 Milton Road [1972?]; and b/w photograph of a police officer looking menacing and a woman with her back to the camera [no date [1972?], no photographer [connected with 48 Milton Road squat??];
7) 3 press cuttings concerning the squat at 48 Milton Road, Cambridge: only one gives source and date (Cambridge Evening News 4 October 1972, entitled ‘Liberals accuse council over eviction of squatters’): the other two are entitled ‘Squatters take over No. 48: Unsupported mothers set up commune’ and ‘Protest march against squatters’ eviction. All include photographs;
8) Five press cuttings concerning support of Ann Baxter by the Cambridge Claimants Union, Cambridge Unsupported Mothers and Cambridge Women’s Liberation and a related demonstration at the Cambridge Social Security offices in Brooklands Avenue, with photographs. Source / date not given except ‘Ink: The Other Newspaper’ 29 May 1971.
