Copy of lease to John Drake of Framlingham, Suffolk, B.A. of the George Inn and lands with lands in Cambridge west fields for three lives at an annual rent of £6 15s 4d in corn and money., 1593-05-19
Scope and Contents
The lands in Cambridge west fields comprise 30 acres late also in the occupation of Thomas Hodilow, and previously in that of John Steven of Coton, and 37 acres 1 rood lately in the tenure of John Steven.
The three lives are those of Francis Drake and Anne Drake, John's son and daughter, and Godfrey Ireland, son of Robert Ireland, yeoman, of Framlingham.
Annotated by Samuel Walsall: Memorandum that when this lease shall be renewed, St John's College desoreth to have certain grounds which they have already enclosed leased to thm; if we cannot then agree for exchange. This desire I think reasonable and wish may be satisfied, Februar. 4, 1635.
Further annotation against clause re alienation: £14 for the master's leabve to alienate was divided amongst the Master and fellows, Feb. 13, 1607.
Further notes at foot: that his lease was sealed the second time, the first being void (as was advised) being for 21 [years] to begin at the expiration of the old lease which was then three year to come.
Note of bond in £30 to perform covenants.
