Includes reports of various committees, including Improvement of Funds Committee, Provision and Bill Committee, Financial Committee, Building Committee etc. Also includes, pasted onto p. 432, (7 Dec 1898) a coloured sketch plan of buildings of the Hospital fronting onto Tennis Court Road, including Nurses block, servants block, main block, laundry, Hope Ward, mortuary. Not to scale [no date, but presumably 1898, drawn up to mark various sites concerned with drainage checks].
11 Feb 1897 Suggestions to commemorate Queen Victoria’s long reign. First choice sent to Mayor ‘for accommodation for convalescent patients (who cannot immediately be discharged) in connection with the Home at Hunstanton’. Letter sent to mayor.
29 Mar 1897 Quarterly Court welcomes proposal of Ladies Committee for regular collections in the wards of Cambridge for the Hospital (especially for children’s accommodation). Peckover regrets his past contribution to new operating theatre had not proved sufficient and sends cheque for £1,000 to complete the job.
8 Apr 1897 Committee meeting re the Great jubilee. As the Mayor has not included the hospital in the list of intuitions which could benefit from subscriptions to commemorate the Jubilee the hospital will arrange its own special appeal.
21 Apr 1897 Jubilee Committee withdraws its idea for own appeal in competition with the Mayors, having accepted house to house appeals arranged by the Ladies of Cambridge
9 Jun 1897 Band of Town Rifle Corps to play short selection of sacred music at hospital – permission granted.
5 Jul 1897 Mrs Adams thanked for agreeing to fund a covered way between Peckover Nurses Home and main hospital (for the safely and comfort of nursing staff). Mrs Adams elected ‘honorary Life Governor’ in recognition of this.
4 Aug 1897 Board has no objection to erection of a bicycle shed in the hospital grounds provided the hospital does not to pay for it.
25 Aug 1897 The Matron, Mr MacAlister and Mr Spalding to go to the Laundry Exhibition in London
1 Sep 1897 After the visit to the Laundry Exhibition they recommended a complete laundry (utilising existing plant where desirable).
13 Oct 1897 E H Douty tenders resignation as Assistant Surgeon on health grounds.
13 Oct 1897 Parquet flooring in Hatton and Victoria Wards approved.
2 Nov 1897 Steam Laundry recommended with estimates of cost
12 Nov 1897 an offer for ‘fancy tiles’ in fire places on wards.
21 Feb 1898 Laundry report received and adopted
23 Feb 1898 Matron produced statistics from other provincial hospitals re numbers of beds, nurses and amounts received in probationers fees. Addenbrooke’s has the lowest salaries and wages bill but we receive £885 in probationers fees compared with £365 at Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford and £188 at the Royal Free in London.
23 Mar 1898 Laundry Report shows present annual costs as £250 (17 washerwomen 25 ironing and mangling) with new boiler and engineer and reduction of staff there would be a significant saving in running costs. Conclusion ‘on every ground a steam laundry is most desirable’.
28 Mar 1898 Patients desiring and anaesthetic for Dental treatment must first obtain a recommendation unless they pay 2/6 to the dentist.
28 Mar 1898 Steam Laundry Report adopted.
31 Mar 1898 Fire in Hatton Ward accumulation of soot
24 Jun 1898 Special Finance Committee: Sir Henry C Burnett, an expert in hospital management had made recommendations. Copies of these sent to every select Governor (printed report between pp395 and 396.
20 Jul 1898 The corrugated roof of the cart shed is cause of rain water coming into Miss Nobles’ bedroom, remedial work approved.
17 Aug 1898 System of Accounts known as The Uniform System should be introduced ASAP. (Recommendation of Special Finance Committee)
14 Nov 1898 Recommendations of Special Finance Committee to be put to a poll.
7 Dec 1898 Sketch plan of siting of new Steam Laundry (p432)
21 Dec 1898 Patients who have not previously received Parish relief but now do so for groceries to be paid by Matron out of petty cash. Cambridge Board of Guardians asked in future to allow patients in the hospital 1/- a week instead of supplying groceries direct – agreed by Board of Guardians -p 469.
26 Dec 1898 Report of Operating Theatre Committee: plans for specifications and reconstruction. Work now completed at cost of £1987 19s 2d, thanks to Mr Peckover’s donation. The hospital now possesses ‘one of the best operating theatres in the country’.
6 Feb 1899 Dr Latham retires at age 65 from hospital work and advocates that it be a rule that all physicians do so, although they can carry on private practice if they wish.
22 Mar 1899 Mr Wherry calls attention to increase in numbers of outpatients (on 4th Mar he had 46 eye outpatients to see).
12 Apr 1899 the Secretary to ask Dr Griffiths for an ‘as to the admission of the child of Mr Ing (the cook at Kings’ College) – Dr Griffiths reply on p536/7. The secretary asked to recoup from Mr Ing any expense incurred by the Hospital.
10 May 1899 Report on Drugs, Chemical and Dressings: recommend buying form wholesalers rather than local retailers and better stock keeping to save money.
