20 Dec 1890 The Medical Officers agreed to contribute £10 a year to the Funds of the Hospital by way of meeting any expenses occasioned by the presence of students in the hospital.
24 Dec 1890 The Report of the Committee as to payment by Medical Students towards the funds of the hospital was read, but the Weekly Board think the offer made by the Medical Officers is not a satisfactory settlement of the question.
24 Dec 1890 Finance Committee ‘The Main think needful is to increase the subscription list. During the past year there have been 147 inpatients and 344 outpatients more that ever treat at the hospital. (See pp54-55 re need to observe Rule 81 strictly.)
21 Jan 1891 Miss Cureton following a minor operation sends letter of apology for absence stating ‘Sir George Humphry will not allow me to get up until next week’.
29 Jan 1891 Medical Provident Institution can give Charitable relief to out patients earning less than 15/- per week if single and 21/- a week if married plus an allowance of 2/- per week for each child. Medical Provident Institution allowed to obtain medicines from Hospital Dispensary at agreed times.
4 Mar 1891 Hope Ward now occupied by an erysipelas patient. Resolved no women with venereal disease be admitted until a ward had been made fit for their reception. (Subcommittee formed to consider) see p93-94.
26 Mar 1891 The recommendation for a covered pathway between the probationers residence and the hospital was approved by the Quarterly Court.
21 Apr 1891 No further extension to the hospital recommended by Sub Committee (see 4 Mar 1891), in their opinion, the establishment of a County Hospital for Infectious Diseases would be the solution, at present no provision for Smallpox and scarlet fever.
20 May 1891 Vote of thanks to Vice Chancellor of University for presenting a bust of Sir George Murray Humphry.
10 Jun 1891 Medical Officer of Health refuses to accept a case of measles (in the Children’s Ward) at the Sanatorium. Secretary to find out if measles mentioned in the Infectious Diseases Act – not mentioned see p117.
22 Jul 1891 A cab be obtained and that the porter covey the patient Emma Gerrald home.
2 Sep 1891 Instruction to Matron and nurses that ‘no patients be solicited to give present of money to the hospital’. ‘Any money given of free will by patients or visitors to be handed to Matron and expended at direction of Board’.
16 Oct 1891 High Sherriff of the County writes to say he will head a subscription list by donating £50 towards paying off the overdraft of about £1,200-hoping many others will follow according to their means.
18 Nov 1891 application made by Matron’ for lectures with the magic lantern be given by various members of the University - permission granted.
24 Nov 1891 Poll to elect an Assistant Surgeon – in addition to 2 surgeons. Mr Deighton wins narrowly over Douty and Griffiths.
23 Nov 1891 Matron reports 5 rabbits stolen but no-one suspected.
3 Jan 1892 Gift of 2 large prints of Miss Nightingale ministering to the Crimean Wounded.
9 Mar 1892 Letter from Town Clerk stating ‘certain cases of infectious disease were believed to have originated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital because disinfection had not been properly and completely carried out there’. see p289
23 Mar 1892 Dr Lawrence Humphry writes to say he had ceased to lecture probationers and that Mr Deighton will now undertake this duty.
28 Mar 1892 Governors great regret at death of Sir George Paget and great loss to the hospital, town and County. Lady Paget to be sent a letter. Lady Paget replies giving thanks p287.
13 Apr 1892 Dr P W Latham writes re state of drains and sewers, the emanations from which are thought responsible for sore throats etc, interfering with recovery of patients. (Hospital Sub Committee appointed to investigate).
13 Apr 1892 Town Clerks letter – 2 patients Mary Balls and Daisy Lakin who were admitted to the Sanatorium after being infected with diphtheria while at Addenbrooke’s.
22 Apr 1892 Committee on Drainage meets. Recommended WC’s in Griffith Ward to be replaced by Doulton ones. Complete plan of drainage requested (R Fields to do this p324).
11 May 1892 Request by Ladies of Association for the Care of Girls to use the hospital boardroom for their meetings is rejected.
12 Jul 1892 Mr Rogers Fields report on drainage. Complete reconstruction of drainage recommended. Mr Field to prepare detailed plans and specifications.
29 Aug 1892 Agreed that during reconstruction of the drains, only very urgent cases are to be admitted.
5 Sep 1892 Treasurer to start separate Drainage Account, £300 stock to be sold to start the account.
14 Sep 1892 Drainage Committee suggests temporary use of Medical School Building in Downing Street be used for some patients – agreed in November p432.
28 Sep 1892 Mr Eadon Lilley offers temporary use of big house, free of rent to use by nurses and servants during alterations.
12 Oct 1892 Copper lightening conductors recommended.
24 Oct 1892 Committee Meeting reports ‘having conferred with the Medical and Surgical Officers they cannot recommend any satisfactory mode of associating Prof Allbutt with the work of the hospital’.
9 Nov 1892 Sanatorium request £9 9s for taking in Mary Gawthrop at request of Addenbrooke’s as this patient did not reside in the Borough and no legal obligation to admit her.
16 Nov 1892 Admission and discharge of smallpox patient, Robert West. Town Clerk to be notified and through him the Sanitary Committee. Prison Commissioner also to be informed.
7 Dec 1892 Drainage Fund Appeal to be launched and advertised in local papers
14 Dec 1892 £500 of stock sold for use by Drainage Fund
21 Dec 1892 Gas Cooking range recommended to substitute the existing on –agreed.
8 Mar 1893 Miss Cureton applies for post of Matron at Worcester Hospital. Recommended her salary be increased to £90pa to persuade her to stay.
