Extracts from minutes:
10 Jun 1886: Letter of complaint from R B Somerset who was writing on behalf of a person who said that may of the patients felt ‘considerable inconvenience’ from the presence of some birds. The complaint being the birds ‘begun every morning before four o’clock such a chorus of song that further sleep was impossible’.
A subsequent report states that enquires had been made and found ’that the patients unanimously approved of the birds, and that the nurse when any patient complained, ordered the birds to be removed’.
1 Dec 1886: Rev Branscombe admitted as an emergency. Dr Bradbury said he was 'utterly destitute and in every respect a suitable person for admission to the hospital, although there was no recommendation paper at the time.
8 Dec 1886: Agreed that 2 Honorary dentists be register under the Dentist Act be appointed for 2 years. Each dentist to attend for 1 hour once a week. The election of these dentists to be in the same manner as that for physician and surgeons.
29 Dec 1886: A child of Edward Bolton of Newmarket Road, Cambridge recommended by the Duke of Rutland had been received as an out patient.
9 Feb 1887:Resolved that when any probationer fells incapable for duty she shall report herself to the Matron who shall direct one of the Resident Medical Officers to see her.
9 Mar 1887: Report of 'Committee on consumption of alcoholic liquors in the Hospital'. Medical Officer requested to substitute Tarragona for port and British or Jersey brandy for French Brandy. Beer formerly given to every patient on a full diet, now only to be given to those for whom it is expressly ordered. Agreed the report be sent to the Medical Officers (their reply on pp284-5)
13 Apr 1887: Negotiations to sell a property in Willingham belonging to the Hospital to the village for a recreation ground in honour of Queen Victoria's Jubilee.
27 Apr 1887: A letter from Mr H H Emsop as to a patient named Kefford was read and referred to Prof Humphry.
27 Apr 1887: Matron requested to grant £1 from Samaritan Fund to a patient named Storey for expenses to and at Hunstanton Convalescent Home.
4 May 1887: Letter from Mr Pemberton re a parishioner named Rayner who after 3 weeks as a patient was discharged and threatened with removal to the Union if he did not make arrangement to return home.
16 Jun 1887: Select committee recommended Miss Mary Newcombe Cureton as best applicant for post of Matron (replacing Miss Browne)
29 Jun 1887: Long letter from Annie Southern re her sister, a probationer who recently died of a brain tumour. She blames the hospital for poor accommodation and food and stress caused by sole responsibility on night duty for her illness and death. Long reply from Deputy Matron defending the Hospital.
29 Jun 1887: Secretary to write to relieving officer to remove a pauper child Charlotte Bentick to the Union.
17 Aug 1887 The secretary (John Bonnett) writes to contractor re their men working in the hospital idling about and not attending to their work. Some of them also have asked the nurses or other officers for beer or beer money. This last practice the Board thinks highly objectionable'. Staunch reply from contractor defending his men (pp351-)
25 Jan 1888: Resolved that no one should be admitted as a visitor to the Infectious cases except by Special permission by a medical officer.
6 Feb 1888: Resolved 'it is desirable that patients suffering form smallpox, typhus and scarlet fever should not be admitted, but this regulation should not apply to patients suffering from diphtheria or luprisiples.
22 Feb 1888: Resolved Hospital Sunday for the Town of Cambridge to be fixed for 10 June
14 Mar 1888: Secretary to write to Cambridge Union re state in which Charles Wyer was bought to the hospital (reply p 506)
2 May 1888: The House Surgeon reported a case of female tramp suffering from Venereal Disease who had slept at the Union last night and had a recommendation for admission as an inpatient. Resolved the case was unfit for admission.
