3 Nov 1880 p37 Recommend to the Quarterly Court a new byelaw that ‘Medical Officers be empowered in the case of patients who are in receipt of outdoor relief who in their opinion cannot be benefited by treatment as outpatients to be discharged’. (See 7 Apr 1881)
3 Nov 1880 Ellen Dean a servant from Mrs Evans of Hatley was sent to the hospital without a recommendation paper.
2 Dec 1880 James Clayton elected Head Porter at 13s a weeks and board and lodging and a suit of clothes. One months notice on either side required (later reprimanded for drinking, being impertinent and left without notice).
7 Apr 1881 Meeting of Physicians and Surgeons, consider medical staff already have right to discharge any patient who cannot be benefited by treatment and frequently exercise this right. They will take care to see that patients do no stay in hospital ‘for longer than is absolutely necessary’. However they do not think it desirable ’that there be any limitation as to distance at which patients reside’.
29 Apr 1881 Mr Southwell prepared to act as canvasser and Collector on Commission of 10% on new subscriptions. (he agreed to exhibit vouchers for examination)
1 Jun 1881 Offer from Anne Bateson to arrange a weekly concert for patients ‘as could bear it’. Accepted
15 Jun 1881 Secretary to write to Saffron Walden union requesting payment of 1s a week for tea and sugar supplied to Henry Pilch an in-patient late of Gt Chesterford admitted 5 Mar 1881. Also a similar request to Chesterton Union in ‘respect of David Bradford in-patient from Barton admitted on 4 May 1881.
24 Jun 1881 During the 4 weeks Mr Southwell has been at work £110 10s 0d has been paid through him to the Treasurer for new donations and subscriptions.
21 Sep 1881 In an effort to reduce the quantity of beer consumed the Matron reported that the key of the beer cellar had been placed in the charge of the head housemaid on account of the porters being in the habit of getting beer at irregular time of the day.
26 Dec 1881 Agreed a sum of £5 be paid to whoever was selected by the Medical Staff to lecturers for teaching nurse probationers
25 Jan 1882 Resolved the patient Lucy Wright be allowed to remain in the hospital for another fortnight.
22 Feb 1882 Letter enclosing donation of £5 5s from grateful patient W C B Beaumont
1 Mar 1882 Letter of resignation from Alice Fisher who had accepted appointment as Matron of Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford.
15 Mar 1882 Testimonial signed by chairman of Quarterly Court ‘Miss Alice Fisher during the five years she has filled the office of Matron of the hospital has discharged her duties to the entire satisfaction of the Governors’.
27 Mar 1882 Mr Wherry recommends machine made lenses for spectacles in most cases (much cheaper) except for cataract patients where lenses can be adjusted by hand.
2 Aug 1882 Letter from William Pilleau enclosing donation of £5 5s expressing thanks for treatments given to his daughter Fanny Pilleau injured by ‘last Fridays’ accident on the Great Eastern Railway’.
10 Jan 1883 Permission granted to Mr Haggard to hold a concert for ‘joint benefit of the hospital and Hunstanton Convalescent Home’
31 Jan 1883 In the opinion of the Governors an out patient named James William Burton of Harston was not a suitable person to receive the benefit of the hospital as his circumstances were such ‘that he could pay for medical advice himself’.
7 Feb 1883 Letter from anonymous parishioner of Over reporting that the vicar (Rev. W Dixon) had announced there would be no more collections made in the church for Addenbrooke’s Hospital as its officers ‘scattered death and desolation wherever they went’. Secretary asked to write to Rev Dixon for an explanation for this outburst.
14 Mar 1883 Secretary asked to write to his recommender, Mr William Bond, that Charles Everitt Boughton appeared to be in a position to support himself financially.
21 Mar 1883 Letter from the recommender gives explanation, (C E Boughton was a Dissenting Minister over a poor congregation and has a wife and two children to support and could not afford to pay for his operation), which is accepted.
