13 Mar 1878 Timetable and Regulation for Probationer Nurses (pp40-4)
3 Apr 1878 Matron reported ‘that the Newmarket Union had refused to pay the burial fees of two patients who had died in the hospital’. The Secretary was directed to write to the Clerk of the Union ‘that for the future no other patient be admitted (see 24 Jul p 107)
17 Apr 1878 The ante-room of the operating room had been adopted for the reception of eye cases.
5 Jun 1878 Matron given permission to hold a bazaar (see p 189 and 208)
24 Jul 1878 Newmarket Union reply saying that Lydia Darnell was not a pauper and owned a house in Soham. Therefore ratepayers should not be expected to pay her funeral expenses. William Howlett was not a pauper but admitted on the recommendation of a private individual.
7 Aug 1878 (p118) D B Balding of Royston writes requesting ‘the name of the surgeon under whose care Charles Gatwood was placed when admitted’
14 Aug 1878 Legal opinion form JP requested : Answer Guardians of Union cannot be compelled to pay funeral expenses in the two Newmarket Union cases.
14 Aug 1878 Letter from Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick enclosing donation, expressing affection of care given in hospital of her housemaid Anne Blandford
28 Aug 1878 Donation of 3 guineas from H Todd Jesus Lane Cambridge for kindness shown by nurses during his illness.
18 Sep 1878 Emma Bowtell Probationer and descendant of the founder of the Bowtell Ward had died form typhoid fever caught while nursing a case. Her family being in ‘indigent circumstances’ agreed the hospital par funeral expenses.
27 Nov 1878 Secretary instructed to write to Clerk of Newmarket Union saying the Hospital Governors do not intend to refuse admission of paupers belonging to that Union
18 Dec 1878 ‘ordered that patients be supplied with a Christmas Dinner of roast beef and plum pudding where not prohibited by the Medical Officers’
30 Dec 1878 Matrons report on the bazaar held on 21-23 Nov to raise money for furnishing the Children’s Ward, after expenses £1020 raised.
22 Jan 1879 Agreed a sum of £2 2s per annum be paid to the Hunstanton Convalescent home
26 Feb 1879 Mr Thackeray of Caius College applied for permission to take a photograph of the portrait of Dr Thackeray. Permission given provided portrait was not removed for the Board room.
5 Mar 1879 Long letter of complaint form subscriber who wanted his broken finger attended to at the hospital. Told not broken. Letter referred to Prof Humphry to reply (see pp253-4)
18 Jun 1879 Secretary to write to Newmarket Union, that Alfred Ashman sent by the Union had not been admitted because he was in an advanced state of consumption and unlikely to receive any benefit.
30 Jun 1879 Miss Fisher (Matron) writes detailing how money form bazaar had been spent leaving a balance of over £34 for Treasurer.
29 Oct 1879 Matron given permission to have a sale of work in the nurse’s hall. Turkish baths to be open for ladies on Fridays.
7 Jan 1880 Lord Braybrooke of Audley End on behalf of wife of his steward Mrs Hesley seeks permission for her to have a course in the Turkish Baths for her rheumatism. Reply grants permission but expects a donation of ‘at least £1 1s per week during her stay.
11 Fen 1880 Matron proposes rules for probationers (p447) including fees per quarter to be charged for First Class, Special, Second Class during training
16 Mar 1880 (pp463-4) Glowing testimonial for Alice Fisher. Refers to training school and fact that her achievements have caused no pressure on the hospital finances (see also pp446-7)
9 Jun 1880 Miss Fisher suggestion of raising subscriptions amongst members of the University has produced £90 (letter form Chair of University Pitt Club) p508)
20 Jun 1880 A cheque for £5 5s was received from Prof Humphry for an operation performed upon Mrs H Armstrong of Ely.
18 Aug 1880 Prof Humphry thanks Board Chairman of allowing members of the British Medical Association to hold meetings in the hospital
14 Sep 1880 William Barker form Ely made an outpatient as no vacant bed available.
Robert Neeves and Samuel Macknesses (?) were in-patients now outpatients
