28 Mar 1870 Matrons’ salary increased from £50pa to £70npa because of more patients in the new building and more staff to supervise. This follows a letter from Matron Agnes Roberson (p44). (Quarterly Court, p55)
11 May 1870 Chairman Prof Humphry has signed a petition in favour of a Bill to relieve hospitals from the payment of local rates (rejected p278)
8 Jun 1870 ‘ordered that the Porter enter into a book the hours at which nurses leave and return to the hospitals’.
3 Oct 1870 Letter of resignation from Josiah Hammond Surgeon (pp131-132)
1 Feb 1871 Clocks in the Wards ‘Mr Reed offering to place a clock in one of the wards upon trail’.
8 Feb 1871 Clocks in the Wards deemed desirable provided noise from the ticking of the clocks does not disturb patients. (Later 2 clocks agreed, one each for Hatton and Griffith Wards)
15 Feb 1871 Typhoid and smallpox cases in the hospital. Board asked to consider erecting separate building for these cased and scarlet fever to prevent spread of infection (p203). Meanwhile no further cases of smallpox to be admitted. Sub Committee appointed report recommending building with 2 wards of 5 beds each with cubic space of 1600 ft per bed (p209). Also p228 and 240
15 Mar 1871 Secretary to write to North Witchford Union for payment of burial expenses of Ann Bishop late of March.
19 Apr 1871 Mr Rowe submits plans for Isolation building but Corpus Christi College (landowners) do not give consent (p249)
19 Jul 1871 Secretary to write to Wisbech Union re paying balance of funeral expenses of James Gilbert of Upwell late patient
30 Aug 1871 Wisbech Union asked for funeral expenses for Ann Sanders who died in hospital
6 Sep 1871 Hannah Webb (Kitchen Maid) sent to prison for one month for ‘stealing a towel, 14lbs sugar and other articles of grocers’ from the hospital.
27 Sep 1871 Parliament has introduced bill to compel town to erect separate buildings for reception of highly infectious patients (p309)
18 Oct 1871 Physicians surgeons recommended that a resident House Physician be appointed free of expenses and be paid £40 pa from the Governors and a further £25 form Physicians and Surgeons out of the pupils fees. List of rules follow if appointment is agreed to.
20 Dec 1871 Wine not to exceed 2 dozen be ordered for servants and patients -Christmas Day- permission of Medical Officers to be obtained in the case of patients.
14 Feb 1872 Miss Woodcock permitted to remain in the hospital to learn the duties of Matron but to pay 10s per week for board.
10 Apr 1872 Matron reported that Miss Woodcock had left the hospital.
1 May 1872 Resolved the Board Room be covered with linoleum
26 Jun 1872 Rules for house Physician and house Surgeon (pp446-52) as agreed by Medical staff (see also p482)
26 Jun 1872 ‘The Weekly board having considered the question of securing one of more beds for Convalescents at Hunstanton home are not at present prepared to recommend the Quarterly Court to secure such accommodation’.
1 Jul 1872 Treasurer authorised to sell £1,000 stock to meet the present liabilities of the hospital.
30 Sep 1872 Quarterly Court - in future the salaries of the House Physician and House Surgeon be £65pa payable wholly by the Governors.
