3 Apr 1867 Names of eighteen patients and clothing etc from the Samaritan Fund (check)
8 May 1867 Mr Wallis to procure a microscope for the Physicians, the cost not to exceed £7
15 Jul 1867 As a result of need to make savings, the number of Superior Nurses [Sisters] to be reduced [to manage two wards on the same floor instead of one]. See letter from head nurses of Bowtell, Hatton, Griffith and Victoria Wards, pp. 65-68
16 Oct 1867 Names of 18 patients and clothing etc from Samaritan Fund (check)
13 Nov 1867 Miss C.S. Wood applies to be Upper Nurse in medical wards on a temporary basis ‘without stipend’. See p. 204 (1 Apr 1868) ‘Thanks and Travelling Expenses’.
4 Dec 1867 Report to the Quarterly Committee from the Financial Committee; ‘Unanimously of the opinion that the domestic supervision of the hospital is far from satisfactory and that Matron [Jane Bishop] does not appear to be able to cope with the difficulties of her position as head of the establishment.’ See also p.145, ‘Quarterly Committee defers making a decision’.
22 Jan 1868 Financial Committee gives more evidence that ‘the working of the hospital cannot be satisfactorily carried on under the present management’.
10 Feb 1868 Matron [Jane Bishop] writes a letter of defence to the above charges but Committee asks her to resign. Committee set up to decide gratuity or allowance.
12 Feb 1868 Anonymous letter about theft of linen, with the names of the alleged culprits given
11 Mar 1868 Complaint from Patient No. 10, Griffith Ward, regarding the inattention of a nurse who had slapped his face. The nurse was reprimanded and the Board made no further order
30 Mar 1868 Letter of resignation from Matron [Jane Bishop] requesting gratuity of £200 after 19 years of service, which was agreed by the Quarterly Committee
15 Apr 1868 Two night nurses dismissed after refusing to attend to duties
13 May 1868 Names of twenty patients and clothing from Samaritan Fund
25 May 1868 Miss Robertson elected as Matron at a salary of £50 per annum
26 Jun 1868 A net deficiency of £990-16-9 in hospital finances is declared. A circular appeal is to be made for extra subscriptions to residents in the University, town and neighbourhood
29 Jun 1868 Report on conditions on wards by Lady Visitors. Nurses are overworked and cannot attend to duties satisfactorily without help
1 Jul 1868 Secretary to write to late Matron ‘to require immediate return of the Diary and also of every sheet of paper or other document cut out of books belonging to the Hospital’. See Miss Bishop’s reply, pp. 253 & 259
9 Sep 1868 Letter from Robert Bendall giving notice to retire as barber (haircutting and shaves) after 56 years. He is now over 80 years old, his eyesight is failing and he suffers from falls and giddiness. Request for a pension, but no record of it being given.
10 Mar 1869 Copy of a poster brought in for those at the weekly meeting to see. P. 368, ‘At the Guildhall by permission of the mayor and Vice Chancellor of the University for the benefit of Addenbrooke’s Hospital. An interesting and amusing entertainment will be given by Mrs Clitherow (the well-known practical phrenologist). Subject "Mind and Brain" teaches Love, Courtship and Marriage and what to do in order to be successful and rise in the world.’
23 Jun 1869 Improvement of Funds Committee report a steady increase in collections in answer to their appeals for sermons in churches and chapels in the town and county
21 Jul 1869 Letter from E.J. Leeke, Secretary to Cambridge Female Refuge, asking that girls known to be of bad character be prevented from visiting patients (pp. 431-2).
