Open box marked 'Mr Ralph's MSS', with handwritten notes on John Ralph and his family and various family artefacts, 1795 - 1974

Scope and Contents

The box is largely empty and so may have originally contained other papers catalogued elsewhere in the Kenny collection. The box has a handwritten note attached about his time as pastor at Northgate-end Chapel in Halifax from 1769 and includes a printed sermon delivered on his death in 1795 by William Wood 'to the Congregation of Protestant Dissenters in Northgate Halifax on the death of their late Pastor'. Also includes: 1899 note by Agnes R. Kenny on the provenance of the Parliamentary medal awarded to a Rhodes ancestor (and framed with Kenny and Harris's Law medals); family history notes on John Ralph's marriage to Dorothy, daughter of John and Faith Rhodes, and their children, Elizabeth and Sophia (annotated 'in the picture'), John Rhodes (1785-1862), Sarah, Maria and Emma; note about coral necklace given to Agnes Rhodes Ralph when she was born by 'Madam Lega', who had received it as a child from Lord Byron (with a note that 'Senora Lega' was Byron's daughter).

Some records series are subject to confidentiality restrictions with the following closure periods: 30 years from date of creation for general administration files, legal records and financial files; 50 years from date of creation for governmental records, including papers of the College Governing Body and College Council, and constituent committees; 100 years from date of creation for personal and personnel records, including tutorial files, staff and fellows files and appointment records, personal finance and pension records. In addition sensitive correspondence and papers concerning College affairs such as disputes and disciplinary matters are closed for 100 years. Restrictions apply on some personal and private papers.

Biographical / Historical

Courtney Stanhope Kenny was the son of Agnes Kenny, nee Ralph, the daughter of John Rhodes Ralph of Halifax. He was the son of the Rev. John Ralph, who apparently preached at the chapel attended by Dorothy Wordsworth.
