Letters and postcards from F R Leavis to Dr R Gordon Cox, 1932-03-30 - 1972-11

 Series
Reference Code: GBR/0269/DCPP/COX/1

Scope and Contents

Letters mainly cover the earlier period, up to the mid-1950s, when Cox was a regular contributor ('virtually an editor', Sept. 1951) to Scrutiny and acting as a fellow-examiner with Leavis for the Downing scholarship examination. Letters continued throughout the war, when Cox worked for the Friends' Ambulance Unit in the Middle East and Italy (see no. 137-8). With annotated lists at rear, presumed to be by Marjorie Cox, summarising subject matter and estimating dates of undated letters. (One such list explains that the numbering on the letters, which is not chronological, is of no particular significance other than a way to indicate that some letters were found together). Marjorie Cox extracted sensitive letters (Nos. 1, 12, 17, 39, 57, 74, 81, 84, 98, 105 and 107 from the numbered sequence) before sharing with Ian McKillop but provided handwritten extracts of parts of these, which have been left in the main sequence for information.
