Biographical / Historical

R(eginald) Gordon Cox (1914-1981) came up to Downing in 1932 and became one of F. R. Leavis's first pupils, gaining a first in both parts of the English Tripos. He was a Fellow at Downing from 1936-1940 until the outbreak of war, during which he served with the Friends Ambulance Unit in the Middle East and Italy. He became a regular contributor to Scrutiny and the Cambridge Review and was in frequent correspondence with FR Leavis from 1932 to the late 1970s. In 1947 he became Lecturer in English at Manchester University and subsequently became Reader in English Literature until his death in 1981.
