Scope and Contents
Office Copy PROBATE OF THE WILL of Sir George Downing of East Hatley, Cambridge, made 24 Aug 1683, codicil 7 July 1684, proved 19 July 1684 -
Commends his body to be buried in vault under the Chancel at Crawden alias Croyden (Croydon Cum Clopton);
All lands in Swaffham Bullbeck and Swaffham Prior, Cambridge except lands in occupation of John Clarke and Thomas Smith; all lands in Bottisham alias Bosam, Cambridge in occupation of Richard Taylor; which lands are of the yearly value of £400, to the use of son William during his life;
houses in or near King Street, Westminster, lately called Hawkden Place, held by long lease from Collegiate Church of St Peter Westminster, all which are now demolished and being rebuilt by name of Downing Street, to Edward, Lord Viscount Morpeth and Sir Henry Pickering Baronet, son in laws, for unexpired residue of term, in trust that son Charles will take the rents for his own use during continuance of leases, or if he dies then in trust for son William, and if their heirs be alive at expiration of leases then to receive rents of the four great houses being part of premises held of the Crown, fronting St James park;
All and every of lands, tenements and hereditaments not settled elsewhere to use of son George Downing and the issue male of his body upon marriage with Lady Katherine his wife;
From goods and chattels and marriage settlement Lord Viscount Morpeth and Lord Henry Pickering to raise such sums of money for the portions and maintenance of daughters Lucy, Mary and Anne - £4000 to Lucy, £2000 to Mary, £2000 to Anne… [later amended to yearly portions]
