Biographical / Historical
Sir George Downing [Founder] let his estate fall into ruin in the early eighteenth century. When his heir, Sir Jacob Garrard Downing, inherited the estate in 1750, one of his first acts was to commission a 28 sheet atlas from Joseph Cole. He took a great pride in his land and slowly rehabilitated the estate. [From Bendall]
