Biographical / Historical

William John Steele was admitted a pensioner at Peterhouse, May 16, 1848. Son of the Rev. James, of Stranorlar, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Born Sept. 16, 1831. [At Glasgow Univ., 1844-7; M.A. 1847.] Matriculated Michaelmas 1848; Scholar, 1849; B.A. (2nd Wrangler and 2nd Smith's prize) 1852. Fellow, 1854. A successful private tutor. Author (with P. G. Tait), 'A Treatise on the Dynamics of a Particle'. Died in College, Mar. 11, 1855, of consumption; buried in Little St Mary's churchyard. (T. A. Walker, 495.) Peter Guthrie Tait (28 April 1831 - 4 July 1901) was admitted as a pensioner at Peterhouse on 21 June 1847. Only son of John, deceased, of Dalkeith, previously Private Secretary to the Duke of Buccleuch, (and Mary Ronaldson). Born at Dalkeith, 28 Apr. 1831. [School, Edinburgh Academy and at Edinburgh University.] Matriculated Michaelmas 1848. Scholar, 1850. B.A. (Senior Wrangler and 1st Smith’s Prize) 1852. M.A. 1855. Hon. Fellow, 1885. Professor of Mathematics, Queen’s College, Belfast, 1854. Professor of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh, 1860-1901. F.R.S.E. D.Sc. Rede Lecturer, 1873. Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1879. Married Margaret Archer, sister of James Porter, Master of Peterhouse, 8 July 1847. Author: 'An Elementary Treatise on Quaternions', 1867; 'Thermo-Dynamics', 1868;' Lectures on some recent advances in Physical Science', 1876; 'Heat', 1884; 'Light', 1884; 'Properties of Matter', 1885; 'Collected Papers', 1898-1900 (CUP). Joint author (with W. J. Steele), 'A Treatise on the Dynamics of a Particle with Examples', 1856; (with Lord Kelvin), 'A Treatise on Natural Philosophy', 1867; (with Prof. Balfour Stewart), 'The Unseen Universe', 1875. Portrait by Sir George Reid in the Ward Library. The Tait Prize at Peterhouse perpetuates his memory. Father of John Guthrie Tait.
