Biographical / Historical

John Newbould Sandars was born on 29 July 1913 at Lancaster, son of Joseph Newbould Sanders, and died on 22 December 1961 at Cambridge. After education at Lancaster Royal Grammar School he was admitted to Peterhouse on 19 December 1931 and came into residence on 5 October 1932 with a major entrance scholarship in classics. He took both parts of the Classical Tripos, with a first class in 1934 and 1935 and in 1937 took a further first in Part II of the Theological Tripos also winning a number of university prizes. In 1938 he studied at the universities of Tübingen and Marburg. He was a bye-fellow of Peterhouse, 1938-40, Assistant Chaplain, 1939, Chaplain and Catechist, 1940 and Director of Studies in Theology, 1940-44. Between 1940 and 1953 he served a number of livings and was examining chaplain to the Bishop of Ely 1951-61. He was a Fellow of Peterhouse from 1946 to 1961, Perne Librarian 1947-53, Ward Librarian 1948-49, Domestic Bursar, 1951-59; Senior Bursar, 1959-61; University Assistant Lecturer in Divinity, 1948-50 and University Lecturer, 1950-61.
