Biographical / Historical
Lawrence Hugh McCabe was born on 14 July 1916 at Muswell Hill, Middlesex, son of Edward John McCabe. He was at school at Eastbourne College, admitted to Peterhouse in December 1933, but not in residence until October 1935. He was in the first division of the second class in Part I of the Geographical Tripos in 1937 and the second division of the second class in Part II the following year. He was a member of expeditions to Iceland in 1936 and 1937, and led an expedition of his own to Ice Fjord, Spitsbergen in 1938. In 1950 the Norwegian Government named a mountain in Spitsbergen 'McCabefjellet' after him. He joined the Colonial Survey Service in 1939 and was appointed in 1940 as Land Surveyor, Public Works Department, Hong Kong. He was killed in action with the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, on Christmas Day 1941. Obituaries were published in the 'Geographical Journal', vol. 101, and the the 'Polar Record', vol. 4, no.25, both in January 1943.
