Carbon copy of confidential letter to the Director of Scientific Research [David Randall Pye] at the Air Ministry, 1940-03-01
Scope and Contents
Power Jets have applied for the registration of the trade mark 'gyrone' for 'turbines producing useful thrust'. 'This name will therefore be used in future as meaning an internal combusion turbine designed to produce propulsive thrust.' It will replace the term 'Whittle Aero Engine'.
He compares the novelty of the gyrone with those of the dynamo or turbine at the time of their invention. It is comparable with an Aero Engine plus Airscrew.
'The name 'gyrone' will be applied not only to the original simple types exemplified in the Experimental Unit, or in the Engines W1. or W2., but also to more complex and improved efficiencies.' It will not be used for 'either steam, or internal combustion, turbines producing shaft horse-power'.
They are arranging that the application will not lead to publication in 'Trade Marks Journal' for, probably, a year and will later consider the question of maintaining secrecy.
Copies for information to all Air Ministry Departments dealing with gyrones.
