Carbon copy of memorandum to H. Gordon Rowe, Manager, Turbine Sales, BT-H, enclosing 11b, 11c and 11d, 1940-02-26
Scope and Contents
Proposed reply to Lancelot Law Whyte's enquiry at the meeting on 21 Feb. as to the possibility of BT-H's manufacturing 8 trial W2 engines: if an order were placed on 1 March, and Power Jets supply a complete set of layout drawings of all details and assemblies, and no changes whatsoever are made, BT-H could issue the drawings for the limiting material in 6 weeks from date and complete the final drawings in 12 weeks from date; they could then complete 8 engines by the end of 1940 provided suppliers met their promised delivery dates. It is assumed that Power Jets will take such steps to see that priority certificates are issued by the Ministry of Supply to ensure that there is no delay in the supply of materials. It is understood that each of the 8 engines will be slightly different, the differences being only minor modifications to blade angles, etc.
Accounts of Graphs 1 and 2 as in 9 above.
On 24 Feb. Lancelot Law Whyte and Frank Whittle asked if the complete set of spare parts for the W1 engine were running parallel with parts for the completed W1. One of L. Wigley's assistants then said that they were, but Graph 3 (11d) showing the final date for the machining, etc., of the complete set of spare parts indicates that there is some slight staggering.
The above is on the understanding that Power Jets make no further alterations in design and on Squadron Leader Whittle's promise on 24 Feb. That complete information on vapouriser, main and pilot jets, flame tube holes and fuel connections will be supplied by 30 April.
Copied to HNS and Arthur Primrose Young.
