English, 1936 - 2006
Scope and Contents
Records of the English Subject Committee which subsequently divided into the English Language and English Literature Committees. The records document the development of the English Language examinations when an informal discussion was held at the Syndicate Buildings on a proposal to conduct a test in spoken English in 1948. The aim was to raise standards in expression and fluency, which would be reflected in the written work of pupils. The first meeting of the English Language Committee was held in April 1952, and the first examinations at SC and O Levels were sat in 1953.
The series also includes minutes of various sub-committees, and a collection of examination publications from 1972 to 2006.
