Certificate of Extended Education, 1976 - 1988
Scope and Contents
The Certificate of Extended Education (CEE) was an Inter-Board examination proposed by the Schools Council for 16+ candidates in the sixth forms of secondary schools and colleges of further education who mainly follow one-year courses not geared to the GCE A Level examination. It was administered by a consortium of exam boards comprising the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations (UODLE), Oxford and Cambridge Schools Examination Board (OCSEB), University of London Schools Examinations Council (ULSEC), and Southern Universities’ Joint Board for Schools Examinations (SUJB).
The first pilot examination for a CEE was held in 1977. The subjects included English and Business Communication, Statistics, Economics, Law and Government, Social Studies, Environmental Studies, Engineering Technology and Health Science. The pilot was extended to 1979 and contained two further subjects, Mathematics with Applications and Home and Living.
The papers are those of the CEE Inter-Board Committee, set up to administer the CEE examination in September 1976, and then by the Cambridge, Oxford and Southern School Examinations Council (COSSEC) formed in 1978.
Papers from 1983 include proposals and discussions regarding the introduction of the Pre-Vocational Education (CPVE) a 17+ grouped subject qualification due to replace the CEE in 1985.
