Biography

Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill (1849-95), Conservative statesman; third son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough; M.P. for Woodstock, 1874-85, and for South Paddington, 1885-94; Secretary of State for India, 1885-86, Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1886; and father of Sir Winston Churchill.

He has sounded out Mayor of Belfast; if Marlborough offered him an honour, Mayor would not refuse it; he has been 'a steady and active friend to party not only in Belfast but neighbouring counties.'

Report of Bentinck's views: Bentinck thinks Marlborough was deliberately snubbed on University question; Beaconsfield's conduct was similar to that in Connaught matter; if Marlborough did not resign, he was likely to be dismissed in autumn; no successor would be appointed until after Duke of Connaught's wedding; if Marlborough resigned, his position in Ireland and England would be perfectly intelligible
