Biography
Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford (1837-1916), 1st Baron Redesdale, diplomat and author, was born at South Audley, London, on 24 February 1837, and educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered the Foreign Office in 1858, and was attaché in Japan, 1866-1870. After resigning from the diplomatic service in 1873, he was Secretary to the Board of Works, 1874-1876. He was Conservative M.P. for the Straford-upon-Avon division, 1892-1895, and was created baron in 1902. He died at Batsford Park, Gloucestershire, on 17 August 1916.

Undated descriptions by members of the British Legation mounted escort of the attack made on Parkes' party by Ichikawa Samuro (Miyeda Shigeru) and Hayashida (Shingaku Misawo) in Kyoto on 23 March 1868, including accounts by Alexander Aberdein, Thomas Cole, Patrick Duffey, Robert Green, Henry Harding, Edmund Hutton, Charles Kingston, Peter Peacock, Henry Reeve and William Wood. The transcript is in Algernon Mitford's hand.
