Scope and Contents

Loose sheets (various sizes) containing manuscript additions annotated by Hart-Davis with galley numbers. As these additions appear in the galley-proofs in MS Add.7799/4, they were presumably made by Young after he had received the relevant typed chapters from Hart-Davis, but before the corresponding galleys were set up.

Galley-proofs of Stanley Baldwin, pasted on blank sheets bound in a dummy case. Deletions and minor additions and corrections have been made by Young on the galleys; while the sign ‘ MS’ indicates that a larger addition sent on one or more separate sheets (see /6 below) should be inserted. Pasted inside the front cover of the dummy ‘book’ is a sheet of explanatory notes by Hart-Davis, 12 December 1969.

Scope and Contents Some years before his death in 1947, Earl Baldwin of Bewdley asked the historian G.M. Young to become his official biographer, a request to which Young acceded with misgivings. Declining health and a lack of sympathy with his subject made his task increasingly burdensome to him, but he was persuaded to continue by his publisher, Rupert Hart-Davis, and the volume appeared in 1952. It received good reviews, and won the James Tait Black Prize; but ‘…it is not a satisfying book; Young’s touch...
