Cyril Edric Tomkinson (1886-1968) was born on 15 May 1886, and educated at Dulwich College and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (B.A., 1908; M.A., 1912). He died on 5 June 1968. Tomkinson was Anglo-Catholic in religion; it has been recalled of him that he described the style of the worship performed at All Saints, Margaret Street, as 'music by Mozart, choreography by Fortescue, decor by Comper, but libretto by Cranmer'.
