Biography

Cyril Edric Tomkinson (1886-1968) was born on 15 May 1886, and educated at Dulwich College and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (B.A., 1908; M.A., 1912). He entered Wells Theological College in 1910, and was ordained deacon in 1910 and priest in 1911. Tomkinson was Vicar of St Stephen's, Lewisham, 1930-1934; St Bartholomew's, Brighton, 1934-1937; All Saints, Clifton, Bristol, 1939-1943; and All Saints, Margaret Street, London, 1943-1951. He died on 5 June 1968. Tomkinson was Anglo-Catholic in religion; it has been recalled of him that he described the style of the worship performed at All Saints, Margaret Street, as 'music by Mozart, choreography by Fortescue, decor by Comper, but libretto by Cranmer'.

The collection largely comprises letters addressed to Sassoon although there are few other recipients such as Glen Byam Shaw and Georgiana Theresa Thornycroft, Siegfried Sassoon's mother. There are also some postcards; draft and unpublished copies of poems; bills; and other related papers.

Conditions Governing Access: In his first letter to Sassoon (MS Add. 9375/878), Tomkinson apologised for using a typewriter but explained that 'my writing is generally said to be illegible'. In her letter of 2 January [1938] to Tomkinson (MS Add. 9926/3/2) Penelope Betjeman returned some notes to him saying 'I couldn't read a word of them so they were useless'. Readers intending to consult MS Add. 9926/2 may wish to bear this difficulty in mind.
