The notebooks contain notes whilst on location and elsewhere, sketches (mostly geological) in pencil, ink and watercolour. There is also ephemera such as business cards and railway timetables.

These notebooks contains notes, sketches and details of specimens collected on a large number of excursions. They include a lot of material relating to work undertaken for the Geological Survey.

Comprising sketchbooks reflecting research undertaken in the Scottish islands. The sketches are mostly of geological features and landscapes. The sketches have been made in pen and black ink and often occupy two facing pages. Some sketches retain the original penciled grid pattern. There are some watercolours.

These mostly cover the Isle of Skye, Isle of Arran, Yorkshire (Scarborough), and other Scottish Highlands. There are also notebooks detailing specimens collected (catalogues); lecture note drafts; maps; and some personal records including details of an 80th birthday event.
