Biography
Sir Claude Aurelius Elliott (1888-1973), knight and headmaster, was born on 27 July 1888 in India. From Stoke Park, Elliott was elected a king's scholar of Eton College in the 1902 election. He left Eton a year earlier than he need have, to go up to Trinity College, Cambridge. BA in 1909, he became a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1910, and in 1914, tutor. After the war he returned to Jesus College, where his administrative skill and vigorous sense of purpose were invaluable, as they were also to the university financial board, the general board, and the council of senate. In 1933 Elliott was appointed to headmaster of Eton. In 1949, after sixteen arduous years as headmaster, Elliott was appointed provost. He died at his home, Lower Gatesgarth, Buttermere, on 21 November 1973.
