Headlam, Walter George, 1866-1908 (poet and classical scholar)
Biography
Walter George Headlam (1866-1908), poet and classical scholar, was born at 24 Norfolk Square, Hyde Park, London, on 15 February 1866. After attending Elstree School in Hertfordshire, he went to Harrow School. He was a scholar of King's College, Cambridge, from 1884 to 1887; he gained a first class in the classical tripos and a large number of university prizes. His college appointed him to a fellowship in 1890, and he soon afterwards assumed teaching duties. In 1903 he proceeded to the degree of DLitt, and in 1906 became a candidate for the vacant regius chair of Greek. He died suddenly in St George's Hospital, London, on 20 June 1908.
