Biography

Francis Crawford Burkitt (1864-1935) was educated at Harrow, before studying divinity at Trinity College, Cambridge. He became university lecturer in palaeography in 1903, and was Norrisian professor of divinity at Cambridge, 1905-35. His publications included 'Text and Versions' in the Encyclopaedia Biblica (1903); an edition of the old Syriac Gospels (1904); The Gospel History and its Transmission (1906); Eucharist and Sacrifice (1921); liturgical and Franciscan studies; and works on Mancichaeism and Gnosticism. He was practising member of the Church of England modernist School.

Scope and Contents The collection consists of letters (the majority to Burkitt); papers and lectures on various subjects; notebooks and rough notes; and newscuttings, mainly reviews of Burkitt's books. There is also material dealing with Burkitt's academic career, such as his Honorary Degrees and the Congresses he attended, and a number of papers and articles written by other scholars.
