Biography

John Neville Keynes was born on 31 August 1852 in Salisbury. He was educated at Amersham Hall School and University College London. He matriculated at Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1872. Keynes was a fellow of Pembroke from 1876 to 1882. He gained a doctorate in 1891.

Keynes became Assistant Secretary of UCLES in 1881. He was appointed Secretary in 1892 on the retirement of George Forrest Browne. At the same time as holding these positions, Keynes taught Political Economy and was a lecturer in Moral Science. Keynes was also an elected member of the Council of the Senate from 1893 to 1925, and served on various other boards, syndicates and councils. Keynes was Secretary of UCLES until 1910, when he left to take the position of Registrary of the University. Keynes remained as Registrary until his retirement in 1925.

In addition to his work as a University administrator and lecturer, John Neville Keynes published a number of books on logic and political economy. His main works were “Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic” (1884) and “The Scope and Method of Political Economy” (1891).

John Neville Keynes and Florence Ada Brown married in 1882. They had three children: John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946), Margaret Neville Keynes (1885-1974) and Geoffrey Langdon Keynes (1887-1982).

John Neville Keynes died on 15 November 1949.
