Biography

George Forrest Browne was born in York on 04 December 1833. He was educated at St Peter’s School, York and St Catherine’s College, Cambridge.

Browne was Mathematical Master at a school in Glenalmond, Scotland from 1857 until 1863, when he returned to Cambridge as a Fellow of St Catherine’s College. He was the Secretary of the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) from 1869 to 1892. In addition to Secretary of UCLES, Browne held many other positions at the University, including Proctor (1869, 1877 and 1879), Secretary of the University Commission (1877-1881), Disney Professor of Archaeology (1887-1892), and member of Selwyn College Council (1886-1930).

Browne left Cambridge in 1892 to become the Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral. He became Bishop Suffragan of Stepney, London in 1895, and was promoted to Bishop of Bristol in 1897. Browne remained as Bishop of Bristol until 1914.

Browne and Mary Louisa Steward Richardson married in 1865. They had two children: George Herbert Stewart Browne (born 1866) and Charles Ernest Christopher Browne (born 1871).

George Forrest Browne died on 01 June 1930 at Bexhill, Sussex.
