It was Needham's original intention that the whole of the 'Science and Civilisation in China' section on 'Chinese pre-gunpowder artillery' be published in the festschrift. However, the eventual title was 'China's Trebuchets, Manned and Counterweighted'. The festschrift, 'On pre-modern technology and science : a volume of studies in honor of Lynn White, Jr.' was edited by Bert S. Hall and Delno C. West and published in 1976.
