Biography

Born Hampstead, London, 11 April 1904. Educated at Christ's Hospital and King's College, Cambridge. He was in the first class in part one (1923) and a wrangler in part two (1925) of the mathematical tripos. Appointed Fellow of King's College in 1927 and university lecturer in 1933. Between 1941 and 1945 he worked at the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. He returned to Cambridge after the war and was reader in algebra from 1949 and Sadleirian professor of pure mathematics from 1953 until retirement in 1967. He died at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, on 30 December 1982.
