Biography
Robert Harris was a commercial photographer active in South Africa. He had a studio at Donkin Street, Port Elizabeth, 1880-1890 (Bensusan 1963, p.236). He exhibited photographs at the Port Elizabeth Exhibition 1885 and the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, 1886. From 1891 to 1894 Harris was in partnership with Thomas McKnaught (Bensusan 1963, p.236). Harris produced a number of photographically illustrated books.

The crane 'Hercules', which arrived in East London in 1875, can be seen at the end of the breakwater. Railway lines run to the newly built wooden wharves in the foreground.

Ferreira Gold Mining Company, Whitehead's Company in distance, 1888
191 x 126 mm. Showing miners at work shifting boulders excavated from the trenches on Ferreira's mine. The Ferreira Gold Mining Company and the Ferreira Deep were named after Colonel Ignatius P. Ferreira (1840-1921) who had laid out Ferreira's Camp in 1886 and was one of the leaders of the early diggers. These two mines were among the most successful on the Wittwatersrand. Whitehead's Mine can just be made out on the horizon.

Goldfields coach, Royal Hotel, Potchefstroom, 1888
191 x 127 mm. Showing the stage coach, drawn by a team of ten horses standing in front of the single-storey Royal Hotel at Potchefstroom. The hotel, which was rebuilt in 1902 was, until the coming of the railway, a stopover for passengers travelling by coach between the diamond and the gold fields.
