Biography

Zangaki was a commercial photographer active in Egypt in the 1880s and 1890s. Zangaki specialized in views of the Nile, the Pyramids and other antiquities, Cairo scenes and ethnic groups.

223 x 283 mm. General view of Pompey's Column, situated to the S of the Arab Cemetery. The column, built of red granite, is 88 feet high including the pedestal and Corinthian capital, and was possibly erected by the Emperor Theodosius to commemorate the destruction of the Serapeum in 391 AD. Its present name stems from the medieval belief that it marked the site of the tomb of Pompey the Great. Photograph by Zangaki.

The Citadel is situated in the SE corner of Cairo and was begun by Saladin in 1176. The Gamia Mohammed Ali or Alabaster Mosque was begun by Mohammed Ali on the site of a palace blown up in 1824. It was completed in the form seen here by Saibl Pasha in 1857. The architect was a Greek Yasuf Boshna; this possibly accounts for the undeciphered word in the caption. The caption on the print...
