Biography

Robert E. Holloway was born on August 30th 1850 in Barton-upon-Humber, England. His father was William Holloway, a school teacher. Robert E. Holloway emigrated to Newfoundland in 1874, in order to take up the post of Principal of St John's Wesleyan College. He married Henrietta Palfrey in St John's in 1878. He was fascinated by science, giving many demonstrations and lectures. He was also a keen photographer. Photographs taken by Holloway were used on two Newfoundland postage stamps and on a Canadian banknote. In 1896 he founded a photographic society for amateurs. Holloway died on September 14th 1904. His daughter, Elsie, and his son opened the Holloway Studio on the north side of Henry Street. Elsie became a popular portrait photographer (Cooke, pp.477-478).

Situated on the other side of the Avalon Peninsula to St. John's, Placentia was the first and most important of the French settlements in Newfoundland and was founded in 1622.
