Newall, Susanna Margaret, 1850-1930 (née Arnold, painist and wife of Hugh Frank Newall)

Biography

(Susanna) Margaret was born on 26 May 1850 in Warwickshire, daughter of the Rev. Charles T. Arnold. Her grandfather, Thomas Arnold, was the famed headmaster of Rugby School in Warwickshire. Margaret married the astrophysicist, Hugh Frank Newall (1857–1944), on 21 June 1881. She was a distinguished pianist who gave concerts in Cambridge, and accompanied and assisted her husband in his eclipse expeditions. They had no children. Margaret died on 10 January 1930.

Letters and related papers re purchase, valuation, disposal and sale of opals by Erasmus Darwin in 1913-1914. Includes a valuation and catalogue of the stones, and letters from Nora Barlow, Kenneth and Clive Cookson, Thomas McKenny Hughes, Frederick Stirling Newall and Margaret Newall, all of whom expressed an interest in acquiring some of the stones.
