Hubert Kingsley Peters joined Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in 1908, aged 22. He was employed in the China Produce Department at Hankow and Shanghai until his resignation in 1929.

The typescript was originally in an envelope labelled 'Mr. Beith's papers (second lot) 1907/1929 Sent by David Beith with letter dated 5th May 1972. Mainly concerning Produce Papers' (the label has been retained).
