Biography

Allen Hutt (1901-1973) was a journalist, Marxist social historian, and authority on newspaper typography and design. He was the chief sub-editor on the Communist newspaper the Daily Worker for 24 years until 1966; member of the National Union of Journalists from 1926 until his death; and author of Newspaper design (1960; 2nd ed. 1967) and The changing newspaper (1973). Hutt was a consultant on matters of design to many national and provincial newspapers. He was made a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 1970.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

The letters are chiefly original letters to Percy Muir and carbon copies of letters from him. Most of the correspondence between Muir and his co-editor John Carter is in item 4, but other items also include Muir's copies of letters to and from Carter.

G. W. Harrison (enclosing a printed review of the exhibition), Courtney Pope Ltd, Philip Unwin. With the letters is a typescript 'Notes for a post-mortem on Printing and the Mind of Man for J. Matson from John Carter'.
