A collection of papers by Evan John Hobden who worked at the Chronometer Department, Herstmonceux and had a strong interest in marine chronometers. The records include John's handwritten notes on marine chronometer sales; his records of the sale and advertising of chronometers between 1972 and 1987; annotated Sotheby's catalogues for 1982 chronometer sales; and pamphlets on the RGO Chronometer Department and the Salisbury Medieval Clock.

Scope and Contents Most of the records retained by the Chronometer Department date to the Herstmonceux era and relate to the service, repair and overhaul of Admiralty owned chronometers at the workshop there. Many of the files bear ‘Chronometer Laboratory’ file series numbers 38 or 39 and have been grouped accordingly.
