The archives comprise a wide range of operational records, covering the management and development of premises and grounds, garden planting, gardening advice within and without the University, visitors and Friends, accounts, bequests (including that by Reginald Cory) and staff, as well as papers concerning interaction with the Botany School and botanical research in general.

The earliest records relate to Woodward's will, estates and the administration of his fossil collection. From the 1880s, administrative records of the burgeoning Department of Geology, its teaching, examining, and students, survive alongside papers for the lengthy project to build the Sedgwick Museum. The archives also include the papers of Professor T. McKenny Hughes, Woodwardian Professor 1873-1917.

The printed pamphlet collection was begun in the early nineteeth century by William Hustler, Registrary 1816-32, and continued by his successors Joseph Romilly, Registrary 1832-62, Henry Richard Luard, Registrary 1862-91 and John Willis Clark, Registrary 1891-1910. The pamphlets cover a wide range of subjects such as educational reform, foreign education, university and parliamentary elections, religion, politics, academic exercises, local history, and the University Library.

Library interiors mainly in Britain, but also in Ireland, the U.S.A., Italy, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Mexico, with an index. Many of the photographs are of private studies, some with the owners, as well as photographs of school, college and university libraries, and libraries in stately homes
