Scope and Contents Holders of superior degrees were required from 1613 to subscribe to the Three Articles of Religion; a stipulation which was extended to all holders of inferior degrees from 1616. The practice was suppressed during the Civil War but reinstituted in 1660. In 1856, following increasing opposition to the test, the declaration was changed to one of being a bona fide member of the Church of England. The names are in alphabetical order. The reference numbers are those of the University Library, where the exercises are kept. There are 22 folios.

Scope and Contents These are certifications by each College of their candidates' qualifications and requests that a degree be conferred. Technically all degrees are conferred as a result of a University grace, and all those about to graduate must request, or supplicate for, such a grace. The supplicats were bound into volumes by academic year. The contents duplicate the degree lists except for a few cases where there are the names of individuals who attempted the final test but do not appear in the degree...

Scope and Contents

University letters were exchanged with the Crown, ministers of state and dignitaries. They covered a wide range of subjects, including the University's rights and privileges, internal governance, religious observance and legal disputes. Also included in this category are letters of royal patronage, or 'mandates', for the award of degrees and offices and, in lesser quantity, formal orations delivered on celebratory occasions.
