Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.6301
Scope and Contents 'A Course of Philosophical Lectures by Tho. Whiteside A.M', 183 folios. The lectures are on mechanics. No Thomas Whiteside appears among the published lists of graduates of any university in the British Isles. This is evidently a mistake for John Whiteside (i.e. Tho. for Jho), who was giving such lectures in the early 18th century (see R.T. Gunther, Early science in Oxford, Vol. I). On fo. 1: 'Jno. Browne'. On the front cover are the words 'Mr. Browne', and on the back cover what appears to...

'Mechanism in Nerve Centers', 1930

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/3377/JTMacC/5/2
Scope and Contents

This is framed as a rebuttal of Professor Alexander Forbes. Forbes wrote a letter which appeared in 'Nature' for 14th December 1929 refuting the arguments MacCurdy made in criticism of the mechanistic interpretation of reflex functions. MacCurdy here therefore justifies his own position and gives further detail to support his view about 'vicarious functions' and the central nervous system. This hinges on the definition of the term 'automatic'.
