Seven soft-bound pocket notebooks in Bateson's hand that he used for documenting his tour of 'the Steppe'. Some have original numbers on the covers which are given in the following descriptions. Entries are mostly in pencil, with occasional use of ink. The content is often exceptionally detailed, with general observations, accounts of incidents, and notes on flora and fauna (sometimes with sketches). A large proportion of the entries are dated.

Letters from James Dixon to his father John sent whilst he was travelling, mostly on the Continent. The letters have been guarded and bound. All are originals, and are addressed to John Dixon at 50 Fenchurch Street, London, except for /36 which is addressed to 6 Mecklenburgh Square. They give a detailed account of James Dixon's foreign travels, particularly of his sojourns in Vienna and Paris
