Bowater Sanderson: Naval Journal

F.H.H. Guillemard: Journals and notes

The collection is comprised of nine volumes of journal entries and notes written during the voyage of the 'Marchesa' and one volume of notes for Guillemard's biography of Ferdinand Magellan. Some of the volumes include lists of letters sent home by Guillemard during his voyage to eastern Asia, China and Japan, which provide a rough itinerary of his journey.

F.H.H. Guillemard: Photographs

Scope and Contents The collection is comprised of twelve large numbered green box-files of monochrome photographs (the majority mounted on boards) of Japan and the Pacific islands. Around eighty percent of the photographs were taken during the voyage of the 'Marchesa'; the remainder probably date from the late 1870s, including photographs purchased by Guillemard, which include many of the smaller images in the collection. Seven soft-bound pocket notebooks in Bateson's hand that he used for documenting his tour of 'the Steppe'. Some have original numbers on the covers which are given in the following descriptions. Entries are mostly in pencil, with occasional use of ink. The content is often exceptionally detailed, with general observations, accounts of incidents, and notes on flora and fauna (sometimes with sketches). A large proportion of the entries are dated.
