Kenya letters, 1934 - 1935
A series of letters from Lanning to his mother and uncle describing his move to a new job at Kitale Stores in Kakamega. Lanning discusses work at the store and its customers among the European community. He reports upon his friends and social life, travels within the region, and reaction to the Italian invasion of Abyssinia [Ethiopia]. Circa 100 sheets.
Kenya letters, 1936
Most of the letters are from Lanning to his mother and uncle reporting upon his new employment in gold mining in Kakamega. Subjects include mining techniques, production, pricing, and his work as a surveyor and prospector. The file contains Lanning’s contract with his employer, Gold and Base Metal Mines of Nigeria Limited, and a catalogue of prospector’s drills. The letters also describe his social life, friends, recreation and travel (circa 100 sheets).
