62 x 40 mm. The Native Administration Court Scribe reads the Governor of Nigeria's message to the people, in pidgin English and Doulai, a N.A. Dogari (police man) puts it into Banso language for the benefit of the mixture of traders and market people who have come - Bamuns, Babbas, Nsunglis, Bums, Kakas, Bawayjus, Fulani, Mbororo, Hausas and Bansos.

62 x 40 mm. Red cam-wood sellers at market, they have the wood dust all mixed with water and sell it in small cakes, to advertise their wares they have reddened their feet and legs with the stuff.

40 x 62 mm. A juju on the roadside from Bai to Mbonge consisting of a couple of sticks, on one an egg, some grass and piece of banana, on the other a pineapple stalk. I never learnt what this was for.
Robert Maddocks Collection
Maddocks has written many articles on postal history, the majority reflecting his primary interest in the history of the Cameroons, particularly during the colonial period. He is the author of a monograph examining postal arrangements during the conquest of German Kamerun by the British and French during the First World War. His works also cover Nigeria, West Africa, Gambia, Zambia, German East and South West Africa, Togo, Ascension, St. Helena, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica and Barbados.

Sacrificial grove, Nsop, 1941-02-09
108 x 63 mm. The presence of ants after a sacrifice shows that it has been accepted by the gods. On the death of the Chief, a goat is sacrificed and the blood is poured on to the large central stone in the centre of the grove.
