Surface gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in 1884 but it was not officially declared an open mining area until 1886.

William Knight came to the Witwatersrand in July 1886 and formed Knight's Witwatersrand Gold Mining Company which was registered on 8th January 1887. This was the first Rand Gold Mining Company to be registered in the Transvaal.
