192 x 125 mm. Showing the city of Johannesburg in its early stages, with single-storey buildings and tents on the Witwatersrand ridge. A photograph probably taken in 1886-7 during the first year of the city's life. Surface gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in 1884 but it was not officially declared an open mining area until 1886.

Witwatersrand Gold Mining Company, Knight's Battery, 1888

193 x 124 mm. Showing the stamp battery buildings in the course of erection. William Knight came to the Witwatersrand in July 1886 and formed Knight's Witwatersrand Gold Mining Company which was registered on 8th January 1887. This was the first Rand Gold Mining Company to be registered in the Transvaal.

190 x 125 mm. Showing neatly excavated trenches on the Witwatersrand, with groups of miners digging in the background. Banket is rock containing pebbles and is associated with the presence of gold.
