Two Europeans stand in the foreground watching the scene below where dhows are moored along the riverbank unloading produce. The town itself is visible on the skyline in the distance.

In the crowded scene labourers are at work quarrying granite either for the strengthening operation on the northern bed of the dam or in connection with the heightening of the dam which took place between 1907 and 1912.

284 x 229 mm. A view showing an army of Egyptian labourers quarrying granite for the dam. The work is entirely manual; the rock, broken with picks, is being carried up wooden walkways to the top of the quarry where it is loaded into railway trolleys.

The construction, situated at the divide of the Nile north of Cairo, was designed to keep the water of the Nile level at all seasons and do away with the old irrigation machinery (Y3041B/30 and 31).
