New Caledonia A Chief’s Hut 151 x 201 mm. A view showing a group standing or lying in front of the chief’s hut, a conical thatched structure surmounted by a decorated spire. One figure in front of the hut wears European clothes. See Plate 200 for an interesting photograph of a New Caledonian house in the process of being built.

Building Native huts, New Caledonia [historic title], 1874-06-18

152 x 197 mm. A view showing two large huts, the one in the background completed, the one in the foreground in the process of being built; a spire-shaped wooden framework (composed of heavy uprights held in place by thinner horizontal bands) has been completed, and people are at work on the structure thatching it from the top downwards. The structure must be about 70 or 80 feet high. A group of Europeans is watching the building work. Photograph by Hughan, and dated 6[18]74.

All that is visible of the man are his arms and legs, his body being covered in a feather cloak and his head in an elaborate mask, probably also made of feathers or down and designed as a symbolic representation of a huge face.
